Overview

The Link Chart widget allows you to visualize and communicate key relationships between entities, using associations and co-references.

About Associations and Co-reference

An association is an activity or relationship between entities. It can be thought of as "subject / verb / object / at location / over time", where the subjects and objects can be free text and/or point to entities within the document.  This type of subject/verb/object association is considered to be a "hard" association.  Soft associations, on the other hand, are comprised of entities that are linked via co-reference.  For example, entities that share similar documents can be said to be linked together by co-reference. 

Edge Density

Each object in a graph is called a node (or vertex). Corresponding to the connections (or lack thereof) in a network are edges (or links) in a graph. Each edge in a graph joins two distinct nodes.

More formally, we define a graph G as an ordered pair G = (V,E) where 

• V is a set of nodes (vertices).
• E is a set of edges (links).
• Each edge is a pair of vertices. In other words, each element of E is a pair of elements of V.

Using the Event Graph widget, it is possible to change edge density, corresponding to the amount of related "events" or "facts" that are depicted on the graph.  Using a slider you can increase or decrease the amount of events/facts, thereby changing the edge density.  This procedure is documented below.

Using the Widget

You can use the Case Visualizer widget to view the relationships between multiple entities.  You can import these relationships to the widget using drag and drop from many of the other widgets (eg. Document Viewer, Entity Significance, Event Graph).

Filtering the Graph to Only Show Associations Related to One Entity

Sometimes you will want to hone in on the associations for a single entity

To filter for just one entity

1. Set filtering as required for associations and co-reference.
2. In the "Show only:" dialog box, type the name of the entity.  The graph automatically updates to only show the specified entity and related events.

Increase/Decrease Number of Related Events

It is possible to increase or decrease the amount of related events for the entities using the widget slider

To show more or less events

1. From the Event Graph widget, ensure that the settings gear is expanded
2. Use the "Max Entities" slider to either increase or decrease the top events shown.

Deleting Nodes

To delete a node

1. Click on the node to select it.
2. Press the delete button on your keyboard.

The node is deleted from the visualizer workspace.  Any connective lines are also deleted.

Changing a Node icon to a VCard and Entering Notes

To change the node icon

1. Toggle the Editor menu from right panel.
2. Scroll down to Style.
3. Check vcard.
4. Scroll down to Properties.
5. Enter notes in the vcard text box.

Viewing Top 10 URLs

You can view top URLs for a node

To add a URL

1. From Properties, scroll down to "Top 10 URLs."
2. Click on one of the URLs for the node.  A Doc. Viewer widget is displayed on the screen, showing entities, associations, and geotags, and providing the original URL.

Using the Time Slider

The time slider provides a way to filter nodes based on temporal relationships.

To use the time slider

1. From the widget toolbar, click on Time Slider.  the time slider is displayed on the page.
2. Move the starting and ending limits of the temporal range.  The nodes are filtered out accordingly, based on their occurrence in the timeline.
   

Dragging to the Case Visualizer 

 You can drag an association from the Event Graph to the Case Visualizer.

To add an association to the Case Visualizer widget

1. Click on a node which will select all edges.
2. Use the drag and drop control in the widget toolbar to drag and drop the node and edges to the Case Visualizer.

About Link Chart to Case Visualizer 

 Individual entities (nodes) cannot be selected and dragged from the Event Graph.

 Only associations (edges) can be dragged from the Event Graph to the Case Visualizer.

 Entities dragged from the Event Graph will contain a URL in the node properties.
