Overview

You can use the Timeline widget to show a view of documents and document counts over time.  This is useful for viewing large volumes of aggregated log events, or for showing the variety of sources returned (eg. news and reports covering specific entity/entities). 

About the Timeline

Using the timeline, it is easy to measure the "Max No. of Docs" metric for a given data set/query over time.  As you scan the widget, the metric stays up-to-date depending on your place on the timeline.  For more information, see Timeline Interface.

Viewing Documents on the Timeline

You can view the documents on the timeline as summaries or icons.  You can also expand each individual document on the timeline to view more detailed information.

To view more document information

• From the Timeline widget, click on the plus sign of a particular document.

Additional description is displayed as well as Google web link to original source (if applicable).

Setting the Time Range and Adding to Query

You can easily use the time range selector to set a time range that can be used to narrow your query.

To set the time range

1. From the timeline widget, use the range selector handles at the bottom of the widget to set the date limits.
2. Click on  "Add current time range to query."

The query is updated and the widget also adjusts accordingly.

Setting Time Decay Date

You can set the time decay date to be the central date in the visible time range.  For more information about Time decay date, see section Advanced Options.

To set the time decay date

1. From the widget panel click on the Set Time Decay Date button .
2. You are redirected to the Advanced Options screen, where the central date from the widget's visible time range is auto-populated for you.
3. Click on Save from Advanced Settings, and this will save the setting and return you to the widget.  The widget is filtered accordingly.
