Common Functionality

Overview

Many of the widgets share common fields and functionality.  This page defines the fields that are held in common by the widgets.

Show Only

The Show Only text box is displayed in the top row of controls for many of the widgets. 

Description:

Use the Show Only: text box to drill down on specific entity names or entity types. Most common uses for this are in Entity Significance, Event Graph, and Doc Viewer. 

i.e. In Entity Significance, enter company or product in the Show only: text box

 

Two useful tips for using "Show only" text:

  • To avoid matching unwanted substrings, put a space at the end of the string, eg "Vulnerability" (my quotes) will match on Vulnerability and VulnerabilityCategory entities, but "Vulnerability " will only match on the former.
  • You can use regex tricks, eg "Vulnerability|Incident" (my quotes) will match on either of those 2 strings, "https?://" will match on "http://" or "https://" etc

 

Drag and Drop

The drag and drop control is displayed in the top row of controls for various widgets.

Description:

You can drag & drop entities and/or associations into the Case Visualizer OR into the query bar using the following widgets:

Ignore/Apply Workspace Filtering

The "Ignore/Apply Workspace Filtering" icon is displayed in the top row of controls for many of the widgets.  It can be toggled to either ignore or apply workspace filtering.

You can filter your result set across the widget workspace, rather then impacting the entire query.  In general, filtering is performed on a per-widget basis, but there are times when it is useful to filter between different widgets.  This is illustrated in the examples below.

Examples

Entity Significance: Double click on an entity to filter, and the other widgets in your workspace will populate with only the documents that contain that particular entity.

Map: Click the  icon to 'enter click-to-filter' mode, then click on a document cluster  to investigate the corresponding documents in the Doc Viewer or Entity Significance.

Doc Viewer: Select an entity from one of the document data tables, mouse over the  icon at the top left of the section header and select 'Filter Selected Items' from the list.

 

To remove a filter, click the  button located just below the query bar, this will revert the workspace back to the original query results.

Add to Query

 The "Add to Query"" icon is displayed in the top row of controls for many of the widgets. 

Description:

Adds any selected entities/associations to the query bar.

Additional Settings

The "Additional Settings" icon is displayed in the top row of controls for many of the widgets.

Description:

This control will expand the row of widget controls to reveal additional settings.

Hide/Show Widget Help

Widget Help is available as a control from every widget.

Description:

Click on Help for useful tips and information.

Export

It is possible to export to .csv from several of the widgets.

Description:

Click on Export to csv and save the .csv file locally.

Visualizations

The visualizations panel is displayed to the right of the workspace.  The visualization menu is accessed by clicking the menu bar along the right side of the workspace.

Description:

Use the Visualizations panel to add widgets into the workspace.

To add a widget to the workspace

  • Double click on the widget thumbnail

  • Click the + at the top right of the widget thumbnail

  • Drag + drop the visualization onto the canvas

To re-order the widgets in the panel

  • Select/deselect the star icon at the top right of the widget thumbnail to designate widgets as favorites

  • Widgets with the red star will appear at the top

  • Newly added widgets or widgets never accessed before will appear at the bottom of the visualization me


Workspace Layout

When more than one widget is added to the workspace, the workspace will default to a split-screen or dashboard view.

When two or more widgets are opened in split-screen or dashboard view, they can be rearranged by clicking and dragging the  icon of selected widget to the desired location.

Full-Screen Widgets

Maximize

The maximize control is displayed in the top row of controls for all the widgets.

Description:

View widgets full-screen by clicking the opposing arrows at the top right corner.

Left Right Arrows

Once multiple widgets are in full-screen mode left right arrows are displayed.

Description:

Use the left/right arrows to tab between widgets.

Inward Arrows

When a widget is in full screen mode, the inward arrows control is displayed.

 

Description:

Exit full-screen and view widgets in dashboard view by clicking the inward arrows.

Layout Arrangements

For several widgets, such as the Case Visualizer and Link Chart, it is possible to select a layout arrangement.  The following layouts are possible:

Hierarchical tree: Hierarchical is a layout style that portraits the precedence relation of directed graphs.

Hierarchical cyclic: Hierarchical is a layout style that portraits the precedence relation of directed graphs.

Orthogonal: Layout which displays nodes in perpendicular fashion (two lines at right angles to one another).

Circular: Circular is a layouter that portraits interconnected ring and star topologies.

Balloon: Layout where vertices are placed in balloon style.

Radial: Radial is a layout algorithm that places nodes on virtual concentric circles around a common center. 

Organic: Organic is a multi-purpose layout style for undirected graphs. It produces clear representations of complex networks.

Generating a Screenshot

You can generate a screenshot for the workspace to capture a specific state, using the "Copy snapshot to clipboard" button.

To generate a screenshot from within an individual visualization widget:

  1. Mouse over the widget header
  2. Click the "Copy snapshot to clipboard" button.
  3. A .png will appear over-layed on top of your browser window.
  4. Right click and save the image OR drag the image into a Powerpoint, Google Doc, email, or report template.

Creating an RSS Feed

To create a RSS feed for current query results:

  1. Select the appropriate communities and sources for your query
  2. Input desired search terms and run query
  3. Select 'Options' on the right side of the screen (below log out button)
  4. Select 'Create RSS for current query' (shown below).  A new window or tab will open with the raw RSS Feed
  5. Select the entire URL and copy (ctrl+c) the URL from the address bar
  6. Open (paste) the RSS URL into the RSS reader of your choosing

Subscribing to an RSS Feed in Microsoft Outlook

To subscribe to RSS feed in Microsoft Outlook:

  1. Go to bitly.com and paste the RSS URL 
  2. Select Shorten.
  3. Click the 'copy' button
  4. Open Microsoft Outlook 2010 
  5. Below your inbox folders, right click on 'RSS Feeds'
  6. Select 'Add a New RSS Feed'
  7. Paste the RSS URL from Step 9 and select 'Add'
  8. RSS will display as folder under 'RSS Feeds'
  9. Right click the new feed, select 'Rename', enter new title
