Overview

The Map is a tool for displaying documents and entities with geo data on a map. It displays documents and entities in both clusters and a heatmap. Custom KML layers can also be loaded (but Mapquest only supports a small subset of the KML language currently).

Using the Widget

The map displays the documents, entities and events from your query. By default, these elements are displayed as a heat map, based on geo tags. The documents are displayed on the map using the following legend:

Icon	Description
	Geographic areas with the greatest concentration of documents are displayed in red.
	Geographic areas with a medium concentration of documents are displayed in green.
	Geographic areas with a low concentration of documents are displayed in blue.

Workspace Filtering

You can use workspace filtering with the map widget, to view corresponding documents in other widgets (Doc. Viewer, Entity Significance etc.).

Ensure that the Map widget and at least one other widget are visible on the workspace.
Click on the magnifying glass so that "Click to filter" mode is enabled.
Click on one of the icons representing a cluster of documents. The other widget visualizations are filtered, according to which document cluster you click on.

Region Selection Mode

You can use Region Selection mode to easily adjust your query, based on the geo selection in the Map widget.

To use region selection mode

From the map widget, click on the region selection icon.
Click and drag the curser to encompass the geographic region of your choice.
Select from one of the following options.

Field	Description	Notes
Add region to query:	Filter query based on boundaries of selected zone.
Set region as geo decay:	Elevate documents from selected geo region to the top of search results, without discounting all other returned documents in query. Graph will re-populate with results weighted in favour of geo decay selection parameters.
Zoom to region:	Zoom the map to the selected region.
Cancel region selection:	Cancels region selection.

The map query and display properties are updated according to your selection.

KML Layers (Google Maps Visualization)

Exporting to KML

You can use the map widget to make an export to KML format. This enables you to easily view the map using the third party mapping tool of your choice.

To export a KML for current query data:

From the Map widget, select the icon along the top row of the Map Widget .
Select Export to kml.
Configure the KML Export Options as described below. For more information, see section Map Interface.
Click on Export.
Save the KML file to the appropriate location.

You can use the export options to change the icons that will be exported for the various entities and events on the map. It is also possible to specify a URL with a custom icon.

Setting an Icon:

You can set an icon as a pin type or as URL

To set a pin type

For the Icon type of choice select a pin type from the dropdown (blue, green, light blue etc.).

To set As URL

For the Icon type of choice place a checkmark next to "Provide."
Specify the URL.

Setting an Entity Type or Event Type:

The KML Options display the various entity and event types so that you can specify icons

To set the Entity/Event Type icons

From the entity/event type dropdown select one of the detected types
Select the appropriate icon from the icon dropdown. Alternately, place a checkmark next to "Provide" and set the URL.

Importing KML

It is possible to import KML

From the Widget toolbar click on the "More Options" gear
Click on KML Layers>Import KML.
Specify file or URL, provide a name, and specify the Community where the KML file will be saved.
Click on Load.
