 Overview

The Map is a tool for displaying documents and entities with geo data on a map. It displays documents and entities in both clusters and a heatmap. Custom KML layers can also be loaded (but Mapquest only supports a small subset of the KML language currently). 

 

 

Definitions:

  • Ignore Workspace Filtering - Ignores filtering enabled by other widgets

  • Click to Filter mode - Clicking on document will filter workspace on selected doc

  • Region Selection mode - Draw a radius to add region to query, add geo decay, or zoom

  • Overlays - Select Map or Satellite mode

  • Show Menu - Heat Map Overlay, Geo-tagged documents, entities, events, KML Layers

  • Display Types - Point, City, CountrySubsidiary, Country, Geographical Region, Continent

  • KML Layers - Show/Hide additional KML layers

  • Export to KML -

Using the Widget

Workspace Filtering

Map: Click the  icon to 'enter click-to-filter' mode, then click on a document cluster  to investigate the corresponding documents in the Doc Viewer or Entity Significance.

Region Selection Mode

To use region selection mode

The following options are then possible from the selection panel

Add region to query:

Set region as geo decay:

Zoom to region:

Cancel region selection:

 

Exporting to KML

 

To export a KML for current query data:

1. Select the appropriate communities and sources for your query

2. Input desired search terms and run query

3. Drag the Map widget into workspace

 4. Select the  icon along the top row of the Map Widget

5. Select "Export to KML"

6. Enter a title, select location (Desktop), and save KML file

7. Open KML file in 3rd party Mapping tool of your choice (i.e. Google Earth)
